Valentine’s Day is approaching and you want to surprise your girlfriend, wife, or life partner with a meaningful gift. Jewellery is always a good idea! But how do you find a piece that puts an instant smile on your significant other’s face? These tips might help you find the perfect piece of jewellery for your lover.

1) Have a look at her jewellery collection

Finding out what she already owns, is a good starting point. Pay attention to what kind of jewellery she wears daily. What pieces are her favourite, does she prefer yellow gold, or rather white gold or silver? You can find more tips on how to determine someone’s taste in jewellery in this article. When going jewellery shopping, try to pick a piece that complements her collection. For instance, does she love wearing her pearl ear studs? You could give her a necklace with a pearl pendant to go with them.

2) Don’t buy a ring if you want to avoid disappointment

If you aren’t already married, don’t buy her a ring for Valentine’s Day. She might think you’re proposing and I think you’d want to avoid a painful situation at all costs, right? So, to prevent her from feeling disappointed you better opt for some other type of jewellery. If you guys are already married, however, then there’s no chance she’ll mistake your gift for a wedding proposal. In this case, a ring for Valentine’s Day is perfectly fine, of course!

3) Add meaning to your gift

To make your gift even more personal, try to find a piece of jewellery with a special meaning. Think of a significant moment you experienced together and look for a piece that symbolizes that moment. Colours, numbers (e.g. the number of gemstones) and symbols are good elements to work with. For example, did you have your first kiss under a starry sky? Then you could go for star stud earrings. Or a bracelet with three gemstones could symbolize the three years you’ve been together. You don’t always have to look far to add meaning to a piece of jewellery. You could just pick something in her favourite colour, for instance. She’ll appreciate the thought and effort you put into it!

4) When in doubt, go for a timeless classic

If you have a hard time figuring out her taste, I suggest going for a timeless classic piece. You can never go wrong with that! Timeless classics are pieces of jewellery like diamond ear studs, huggie earrings, a necklace with a (heart) pendant, a tennis bracelet, a gold bangle, etc. These pieces of jewellery are subtle, yet elegant and can be worn with every outfit and for every occasion.
